Hi Marrena,
I was hoping you could provide some guidance. I am a vegan for ethical reasons and have done some research on fish oil alternatives. For some time, I've been aware that fish do not produce Omega 3's, there are heavy metals present in fish, and the seas have been tragically depleted of populations from overfishing. Fish get there Omega 3 from algae so there must be a good source of Omega 3's for vegans. I would like your guidance on spirulina, which is a very healthy, plant based form of Omega 3 and a product I found called V-Pure. Three capsules of V-Pure contains 270mg of DHA and 89mg of EPA. You can google the product to see more about it if you are interested. I was wondering how much of V-Pure would I need to take daily for the diet?
Thanks.
E

Insane amounts. Don't bother.

Omega-Zen is the only worthwhile vegan product, with 300 mg of DHA in one capsule. You still have to take a lot of them, but it's manageable.

But is there any EPA in the Omega Zen? I thought that was important as well. Thanks.

Your body can convert DHA to EPA. You'd have to take fifty of those V-Pure capsules a day to get the EPA I recommend for a 130-pound woman. Even if someone could afford that, I doubt they would want to do it (and of course the DHA would be too high). So there would have to be conversion with your product. Might as well take something that's more refined, easier on the pocketbook and the tummy.

Is there any difference in the absorbtion of the DHA from an algae source versus Fish oil supplements?
Also adding Lipase to the mix, does that enhance absorbtion?
Thanks.
