I know your stance on hormonal birth control, but for those of us who have to be on the pill, is there anything we can do to make the diet more effective?
I am on Ortho-Tri for "suspected" Poly-cystic Ovary Syndrome. Sadly I haven't been given a diagnosis and was put on Ortho-Tri to keep my period regular and hopefully allow me to lose weight again.
I just really want to make this diet work for me, if I could have my sex life back, it might make up for the fact that I can't lose weight at the moment.
That's really odd. I'm not a doctor, but I think PCOS is hardly a disease that's difficult to diagnose. You just get an ultrasound--if there are no cysts, you don't have it.
My diet may help you with regular periods and losing weight. Some women have reported both of those side effects.
Actually, PCOS has many and varied symptoms. A lot of women with it don't have the cysts. Some common symptoms are very infrequent periods, cystic ovaries, insulin resistance, great difficulty losing weight, high testosterone, high DHEA, high cholesterol, high triglycerides, hirsutism due to the high testosterone and DHEA, and infertility, but not all women with it will experience all of these symptoms. I have PCOS and my main symptoms were the wonky cyles, the cysts (I had the classic "string of pearls" appearance) and insulin resistance. My fasting insulin level when I was diagnosed was more than double what it should have been, but all other hormone levels were normal and I've always had normal cholesterol and triglycerides. BCPs really just mask the symptoms of PCOS, in my opinion, but don't really treat it. They can help keep periods regular and bring down testosterone levels which is why they are frequently prescribed for PCOS. There is a medication called metformin which helps a lot of women with PCOS, even if they don't have insulin resistance. It helped me tremendously! Any chance of giving that a try?

Actually next week I'm finally getting my fasting bloodwork done so hopefully I'll finally get a diagnosis and they can get me on to something that will help.
