There's a woman on another board who noticed skin problems after starting to take fish oil. She's not on the O diet, but taking 1200 mg. daily. She was wondering if it was related. I told her that it was related and women on the O diet experience this often. I told her that it was effecting her hormones.
Another poster who's a traditionally trained dietitian comes and says that the fish oil has no effect on hormones. I know that she is extremely traditional and seems to take what she learned in school as gospel truth. So, could you please provide some documentation on the truth about the hormone and fish oil link?
Yes I have read the book as well as talked with zaneblue online many times before the O diet even had a name. I would just like to be able to provide a link to a study or something to share on the other board. I know from previous posts that zaneblue always had those links ready for anyone.
Actually there is very little research on fish oil and hormones. I've got research on fish oil and neurotransmitters and fish oil and improved genital circulation, but the fish oil/hormone connection is just recently being researched, so I'm not surprised she didn't know. Here's one on rodents:
Alteration of the lipid composition of rat testicular plasma membranes by dietary (n-3) fatty acids changes the responsiveness of Leydig cells and testosterone synthesis.
Basically the theory in humans goes that fish oil reduces triglycerides and reduced triglycerides increase testosterone. It hasn't been studied in full yet, so I did not include that in my book, although personally I believe (and talk here) that fish oil certainly does alter hormone levels. Too many people have only taken the fish oil (and not done any of the other SHBG-lowering parts of my diet) and reported the oily skin and hair, etc.
