I'm having a hard time differentiating between my fish oil options (I'm guessing Costco might be my best bet financially), so I'm going to put the info here and hope that 1. it helps someone else who's looking through their options, and 2. someone can help me figure out what I should go for. or 3. writing it all out will help me figure it out on my own, which will ideally lead back to #1.
To start with, I weigh about 150 or so (maybe 155? I'm tall), so if my math is right I think I'm aiming for ultimately being on 2,100 EPA and 1,650 DHA per day. So 1. I have some friends who are pretty on top of their fish oil information who swear by OmegaBrite. (www.omegabrite.com if anyone's interested) Serving size = 3 capsules, which contain EPA 1,050 mg, DHA 150 mg, other Omega 3 150 mg, Omega 6 60 mg, other fatty acids 85 mg. Cost is $22 per 60 pills plus S&H but minus 10% if I do the automatic refill program. The rest are what I found on Costco's website: 2. Kirkland Signature Enteric Coated Fish Oil One Per Day Serving size = 1 softgel, which contains Fish Oil Concentrate 1200 mg, with Total Omega-3 Fatty Acids 684 mg. Cost is about $16 for 180 softgels, although they're on sale at this moment. I see no EPA/DHA breakdown which makes me nervous. 3. Iceland Health Maximum Strength Omega-3 Fish Oil Serving size = 2 softgels, which contain EPA 300 mg, DHA 200 mg, Other Omega-3 Fatty Acids 100 mg. Cost is $24 for 220 softgels. 4. Kirkland Signature Fish Oil Concentrate Serving size = 1 softgel, which contains EPA 180 mg, DHA 120 mg in "Natural Fish Oil Concentrate 1000 mg." Cost is $9 for 400 softgels 5. Nature Made Omega-3 Fish Oil 1200 mg Serving size = 2 softgels, which contain EPA 432 mg, DHA 288 mg in 2400 mg Fish Oil Concentrate. Cost is about $11 for 300 softgels. So basically nothing on Costco contains more than 500 mg EPA&DHA per capsule, though I'll go to the store near me to check in person, and even the OmegaBrite that my friends love don't meet Marrena's standards. I thought a couple of those were better than they are when I looked at this last night, but clearly was tired and not looking at the amount per serving / amount per pill discrepancies - although since different capsules contain different amounts of fish oil to begin with (OmegaBrite capsules are only 500 mg each, the Kirkland Enteric coated ones are 1000 mg each, and all the others are 1200 mg each). Marrena or anyone who knows much about this stuff - how important is the DHA? Since the OmegaBrite capsules are only 500 mg apiece, they do contain more than 500 mg EPA&DHA combined per capsule, but the DHA is very low compared to other brands. They claim there is evidence that EPA is the critical ingredient for maintaining healthy mood in adults (and that DHA is more necessary for infants) - from what I've read in your book, it seems like this should be the same process by which it helps libido etc in your diet? I will be taking fish oil for heart health (I recently lost my mother due to heart disease, which it now appears runs very strongly in my family), ADHD, depression (situational due to grief, so I don't really want to medicate it if I can help it), and anxiety (to the extent that general stable mood helps my anxiety), and then libido (which of course is getting knocked around a lot right now due to all this other stuff, but has been pretty erratic my whole life - I always thought it was just my normal personality). Is the DHA critical for any of that as far as anyone knows? So basically I'm looking at about $60 a month for fish oil if I go with Omega Brite. I'm going to look at the numbers for Sears/Carlson, GNC, Minami, and Zone Labs - I feel like I need to start a spreadsheet! - but if anyone knows of a cheaper option that's still good, or can tell me what brand people have found at Costco, that would help a lot. Thanks! -Steph |

I have tried the Omegabrite product myself. Unfortunately it does not work at all for libido purposes.
GNC has a very cheap quality brand, their triple-strength fish oil. Thanks for the other info! 500 mg of EPA + DHA is okay, just don't go under that. So that Icelandic brand is fine. |

That's a shame. Do you think it didn't work because of the lack of DHA or for some other reason?
The Iceland Health one only had 500 mg of EPA&DHA per one serving of two softgels, so sadly it's out too. I was copy-pasting from about 5 websites, so I just put the "single serving" amounts and then made sure to note how many = one serving. I will check out the GNC option - thanks! |

I'm certain it didn't work because of the lack of DHA.
Oh, thanks for catching that with the Icelandic stuff, it's so easy to overlook the serving size! If you take the GNC fish oil, you will have to supplement with a DHA product, the ratio is off. |
